I got all components, such as the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+, SN25P, OCZ RAM, SATA2 Hard Drive, except the video card coming Monday...
Anybody use the "Heatsink Compunds" that came with the SN25P. How is it? Good? Comments? Suggestions? What is the CPU temperature for Idle/Load?

What is the best way to put it on? Should I spread it around or put it all in the middle?

Thanks!

Hiya,

Not sure if the thermal compound is any good, hopefully someone else can answer that question. But if I remember correctly, I think you just put on the thermal compound on the proc in the middle, grab an old credit card and use the edge of it to spread it evenly (on the entire surface of the proc) to a thin layer.

There are two methods I know of and are just a matter of prefference as the pros differ on this; including AMD and the Arctic Silver folks.

1: the small dab in the center:
The idea here is that this prevents bubbles from forming and also creates a circular contact area of approx 80% of CPU. You dab on a very small amount (abouttwo rice grains), and then move the heat sink a little on it to spread it.

2: you spread it with sometimg (a plastic bag over your finger will work).

I used the first method as i'm pretty sure thats what 99.9999% of the computers are shipped like (could be wrong though)

OBTW, I used Arctic Sl]ilver #5 (about $8US) -just to be sure ;)

I do #1 all the time as well.

Cheap (expired?) plastic credit cards work good for spreading it out too. Works like a masoner's trowel, nice thin smooth finish.

Business cards work easy too. I tend to cut it into a couple of strips so I have a small "trowel" the size of the die or so to work with.
