Sn25p Vs. St20g5

Well read the specs, different chasis design... integrated graphics, dual slot support, chipsets, HDD capacity... and several other differences
 
I did, but after reading some reviews, st20g5 is going to be smaller...but i'm wondering if it has onboard video cause I can't tell what that ati chipset is.
 
I am buying ST20G5 once it is available in Canada. The main reason is that it is smaller, looks better it has intergrated video and it will be less expensive.
 
Good points, but the P has increased cooling, more HDD capacity, and NForce4 chipset. IDK how well the ATI chipset stacks up but I'd imagine it's not fantastic.

Another selling point for the P chassis for me is the 350w power supply, aside from some of the other points mentioned already.
 
Well, the G5 can handle anything you throw at it as well as far as power consumption goes
 
So the ST20G5 has X300, but it also has a pci-e x16 slot so i can put in a x800xl in it right? And about the cooling, is the sn25p better because it's just bigger in general or does it contain some special cooling.

Overall I like the small size of the ST20G5, and 350watt doesn't really matter since since the ST20G5's power supply can handle pretty much anything. I just hope that ati chipset is comparable to the nf4.
 
P isn't really that much bigger than G5... I mean will an inch more kill you for all the improvements?
 
Aye, some talk about the P chassis like it was a server-sized rig. And if you're into gaming, I'm not too sure how well the integrated video will perform.

Anyhoo, I'm sold on the SN25P, even though it will be expensive as hell. What worries me is all those claims about Venice possibly not working with some mobos. I hope the Shuttle isn't part of the nay.
 
I'm obviously not going to use the x300, but it's nice to have something to hold onto while waiting for some prices to go down.

P chassis has 3 fans as compared to the G chassis's 1 fan.

Any tests done on noise difference between the two? The extra fans on the P suggests that it's louder than the G.

I think the G chassis is louder than the P's, but I didn't do any specific research

tech says that the P is hitting around 50dB.

I have the G chassis (SN95G5) and the fan never spins up over 1000RPM (temp - 40C setting in BIOS) and it's running 25db (measured from 4ft away even :p)

Which also includes northbridge fan and 9600 Pro stock fan.

This box supports monitor spanning, and I'm in love with the fact that it has a DVI port resting on a separate video card.

When I make the investment in a PC (I currently use macs now) I think this will be a good target chasis, simply because I can power a Dell 2005FPW with the X800 and a 2001FP with the X300, and use it swiveled for programming .NET / reading eBooks.

P chassis has a design flaw: overheating RAM.

this has happened to quite a few users on sfftech.
 
P chassis isn't really all that great, 5 fans, so lots of noise, the cooling is no better than the G series at all. Both chassis will be noisy if you have a high end graphics card in it. IMO the G chassis looks loads better than the P chassis but that is personal preference.

The SN25 has very limited overclocking options, the RS480 chipset is no slouch and should perform just as well as the nForce4. The power supply of the ST20G5 will power anything you can cram into the case, same with the SN25 powersupply. Dont worry about the rated wattages, shuttle is very conservative. You will be fine on power in either one.


The two cases are equal, it basically comes down to A) which do you think looks better
B) do you really need the extra space of the P
C) do you want to deal with 5 low diameter fans or one larger diameter fan where both provide the same level of cooling?


PS : The G-chassis is very easy to watercool whereas the P chassis is much more difficult.

I have a Shuttle SN25P and I'm not sure where you got that. I'm also a member over at
sfftech. There has been one person with such a complaint. Even under a full load of Prime95 for many hours my temps have never gone higher then 46C.

You are misinformed....

I don't hear the fans at all. Very quiet. Nothing to deal with at all works perfectly and is super quiet. Tour opinion is unfounded and not a fact.

whether this is true or not, i cannot guarantee as i do not have the P chassis; however:

at sfftech, there are at least 3 posts from different users regarding the ram heat issue
 
Well, I cant wait til the ST20G5 comes out because I plan on getting it. I gotta wait til

A) it comes out and is in enough quantity to be at a reasonable price
B) people either here or SFFTECH get it and post their opinions about it

The sooner the better because the potential price I can get for my current rig is detereorating daily.

Hmm, but then I think to myself, "shoes, wait until summer when there is the newer AMD chips out like Venice and Carmen SanDiego, that way you can be sure there are not compatibility issues and everything will be cheaper, AND there could be a nForce4 based G5 chassis."

Hmm...so there's a chance that the Venice cores won't work with the ST20G5's chipset? That might throw a wrench into my plans.
 
yeah there was speculation that it might not be compatible due to the new ati chipset, but most people seem to think that a simple bios update would fix that so i dont really know how much of a problem it is.
 
no ram issues in sn25p for me.

I wanted nforce4, space for 3 hard drives, and no onboard video, made my choice pretty simple.

90% of the time, the rig is not noisy at all. At boot it is very loud, very briefly, and if you use the smartfan, it will kick up to high speed now and then, at least in my case. I've got an fx55, 2 raptors, a deskstar, and an x800xl in mine, though, so there is plenty of heat to go around.

i am interested to know...what is your room temp, case temp, graphix temp, ram temp and hard drive temp?

if you could share those info, it'd be grrrreat
 
I have the P and almost an identical system to Eastvillager and mine is just as quiet and my Ram has never overheated either. had a G series before and loved that one too, the only thing my old G5 had that I wish this one had was wifi built onto the chassis, but thats my onlt negative, and its a pretty small negative.
 
Regarding the ram, I'd be suprised since its quite difficult to get ram to dangerous temps.
Regarding watercooling, has anyone heard of a successfull H20 venture with the P chasis yet?
 
I havent heard much with the P chassis, but it doesnt look to hard to fit my Poseidon unit I had in my G5 in there somehow.

To get around the WiFi I have a linksys USB adapter, works nicely....

I'll eather pull the P15 unit out of my old shuttle or get the new P15g, havent decided yet. I'd like to leave the old system whole, so I'll probably leave it in there.
 
I heard about the G5 chassis with an NF4 board through rumors on the SFFTech forums.

I would prefer a NF4 chipset over the ATi one, but from the reviews I have seen the ATi one seems pretty good, and will probably get better once they get that 232FSB issue worked out.
