First, yes I've googled, but there are lots of options and in my case, I'll probably have to pay for a license so I'm looking for experience/advice so I can put money towards the right things.

The custody dispute between me an my ex has reached apex and I'm needing to get evidence ready for court.

We've primarily communicated via text messages over the years, but since we remained friends, we talked a lot. I'd need to extract around 5 years of pictures and messages which adds up to something like 10gb. Then I have to parse it to weed out friendly banter to get the useful meat out.

Just getting it to an editable doc on pc would be a huge first step.

Secondly, would this be a use case for ai to dig through?

Thanks!

Yes

Assuming you're on Android cause you said SMS and not iMessage - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en_US&pli=1

That will get you to XML and then go from there? This is what I used when on Android (on iOS now).

This one can do other format exports but no experience with it - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartpositive.sms_exporter
I've used that for backups before, but I never tried to open the xml results on a pc before. I'll give it a whirl first since it's free. Thanks.

I've avoided ai till this point so I'm sorry for being dumb here, but how would I go about it with this kinda thing? I figure it's a little more than just asking it to draw a picture. Lol

Depends on what you need it to do/look for/find specifically - but I would go with "Find all instances/texts of 'topic x/y/z' being discussed or referenced by either party and list dates/times for each found instance" so that you can verify it's not hallucinating by then finding the given texts on time/date yourself (even just by searching in the XML).

The more verbose/descriptive/elaborate you are to it in tasks, and with specificity, the more information you feed in/give it to work off of.

Interesting. Would AI output even be admissible even for custody battles? Just because it would be so easy to fabricate. Have you consulted your attorney on the best way to handle this?

I would personally be ready to have the entirety of it available. Give me a couple hours and I could have years of out of context back and forth dialogs created with meta data. It is a bit more work to do 10gb worth of faking so it would have more value. But have your outline of see page xxx line xx for each of your offenses you are referencing.

Nah, if I were to use ai or edit, it would be to help pinpoint where the good stuff is.

The whole thing would be submitted, but we talked every day about nonsense usually and only had an argument like once a month. Many arguments were repeated so I just would like to pull out "day x, we talked about xyz, here's the line I'm interested in, but full context is available"

Yea, but it'd take a lot more work to make that exponentially larger. No?

I have older backups that I can match up with recent. She does the same so if there's a dispute that bad, they can request hers.

It's better than just my word I'd think, but maybe not. 🤷

Oh for sure. having all of it and then referencing snippets would be good.
