SMP questions

I'm trying to get a second SMP client folding on one of my systems but I can't get it to work. I went through the entire installation procedure and repeated everything I did for the first client except set the machine ID as 2. Is there anything else I have to configure to get a second SMP client working in good order? The second client attempts to DL a WU but continuously fails with the endlessly repeating message stating it can't connect to the server..

Another question I have concerns transferring SMP WUs from one system to another or from one client to another. It seems that something has changed in the new client since I'm having problems accomplishing this. Can someone run me through how to transfer files properly because the target client deletes the WU whenever I attempt to do this with the message of 'missing work files' coming up. Never had this issue moving WUs before.

Post the fahlog.txt here and we can tell what's wrong.

Basically, to install the client, you need to do those steps :

-execute the installer to install the smp files.
-Install MS .NET Frameworks 2.0 since the smp client need it.
-Execute Installer.bat to register mpiexec.exe. Make sure you use a administrator account with a password as it will reject if there is no password.
-Run fah and configure it, make sure you set "Use IE Settings" to false.

Normally, at this point, it should be able to download the core and the WU then process it.

To move a SMP WU, you need to move the whole work folder and queue.dat, not just some files.

I will ask again, can you post the fahlog.txt contents including 25 lines before and after the line telling it cannot download a WU. I need to see this to tell why...

Just to be sure and clear on this. You are trying to get a second SMP client running on one system that is already running one instance of the SMP client? This is a dual, quad core system right? I'm not sure on dual, dual core boxes or single quad core boxes. I do know that on my dual quad core box each instance of the SMP client runs 4 threads. Also - like Xilikon said, post that log.

That's what I thought at first, but my other SMP clients are receiving WUs from Stanford without issue. This problem is still in effect.

Did you set "Use IE Settings" to yes ? If yes, set to no and see if it helps.

It was set to no, the same as my other clients. At this point, the only thing I can try is to reinstall and hope it will work better the second time. Thanks for your help.

If its a dual quad box the easiest way to set up the second client is ......

Make a copy of the whole of the first clients folder.
Rename the copy. I use SMP 1 & SMP 2.
In the second folder delete the work folder amd the queue.dat file.
Use Notepad to open the client.cfg file and change the machineid to 2, I also change local to 1 so its closer to the correct number of finished workunit.
Save the changes and you should be good to go.

The SMP client can be funny about shutting down and restarting.
I've found that if you do shut it down the backup you work folder and queue.dat file.
That way if it does not restart correctly then you have a chance of not looseing any work done.

While running two SMP clients on several dual quad core boxes, I ran into a problem that I tracked back to the Server2003 "feature" set. One of the things installed by default in server2003 is the IE enhanced security, and It caused problems on my computers when the cores tried to connect to the F@H servers. Since I don't like IE prompting me every time I download something for my server, I just uninstalled the feature in the add/remove programs dialog. One restart later and everything was running normally. This may be worth trying if you're on Windows Server 2003.
