smp on dual hyperthread machine?

My work has offered me a Dell 1750 server which is one of a few being replaced with dual quads
it has dual xeon DP they are i believe single core with hyperthreading 3.06 ghz.

the question is should i bother with it? i dont really want a sonic rocket booster in my basement unless it can actually do SMP units in time.

any ideas?
 
You'll get better numbers if you disable the hyperthreading, but yes- it'll make deadlines. It may cut it close, but it'll make it.

I can't emphasize that enough- DISABLE HT if you want to do SMP Folding on these.

As mav said - it will be very tight on the deadlines and might not make it if anything else is running in the background. I have a similar dual 2.8 xeon system and disabling HT did help some but it was hit and miss on making the deadlines.

will disabling hyperthreading help on my p4 that are just running a single console? the only other thing i run on there is mach3 CNC software and darts scoring program :D (and i stop FAH when im CNCing)

If you are only running one console, it won't make a difference. Just don't try to install two and have it split them across the virtual cores. The reason it matters in SMP is that each thread should be pegged at 100%, and HT only helps when you have two (or more) threads with a lot of idle time. When one is waiting for work, the other takes over.
 
A couple of years ago, people used to run two standard clients and HT enabled. I did that with two 3GHz P4 machines and they were noticeably more productive than having HT disabled and running one client. What has changed?

Also - run Linux if you can, I read it's more productive.

 
it will be a good excuse to try linux, the machine wont be doing much else besides heating my house :) it s a dell poweredge1750. i just removed 11 of them from the render farm to be replaced with 18 dual quad 3ghz xeon 1950s!
they will be "scrapped" so i get one :D maybe more if nobody else wants any.

and no i cant fold on the new ones.. unless i want to trade a lot of points for my job :D all the farm would probably put out about 140000ppd!

that is guessed from my quad q6600 @ 3.1 doing about 2600 x2 for dual quads, x 18 for the new boxes, and the current machines power (18 x dual dual xeon 1850s) and workstations that are pressed into service when the user went home (some dual quads there already)

Too bad you can't borg at work. I know how you feel. I am in the same boat. I can't borg at work. And none of my co-workers has modern boxen at home.

Lol - thats a pretty broad and ill-informed statement. My dual xeons crank out about 4,000 points per day. I think you mean the older netburst xeons, pretty much the same architecture as Pentium 4's. They are about even across the board, current Xeons fold pretty much as well as current Intel desktop processors, older xeons fold just as well as comparable desktop processors of the same technology and age.

That's about right.... I have an older dual Xeon 2.8 system also. I gave up on trying to run the SMP client on it, it was hit and miss if it would make the deadlines. Now it just slowly crunches away on 2 regular clients. Compared to the newer Xeons and Core 2 processors it's just an old slow inefficient power hungry beast, but it does still produce results....

With the SMP client correct? My dual Bartons are doing around that or slightly better with the P2653 WUs, but they're only 2.0-2.3GHz. The Netburst architecture was better at other tasks; folding wasn't one of its strong suits.
 
Ah ok, makes sense now I guess. I just see 2.8ghz and automatically think it should be faster than 50 minutes. But then I remember back in the day when Intel had all the ghz, yet lesser clocked AMD's were still faster.

This is on a regular console client.
