okay guys, been doing alot of reading here and cannot decide which way to go. The rig in question is in my sig. Should I run SMP + GPU or NotFred + GPU.............. either or, + or -, but my 280 is turning some good numbers, so I would like to continue to use it as part od the equation.

Which way and why? All answers from experienced folders will be taken to heart. I want to dedicate this rig to the [H], but I also want the best possible points too.

Oh yeah, the CPU cooler is a Beast. I forget the name of it, but it has 2-120mm fans on it. Lemme know your opinions, I would like to start getting this set u tonight. I got my passkey today. been folding for a while, but i'm not sure if I have to finish 10 units with the key, or if my last 10 units will count.

Please advise.

I'm not experienced, but you must have folded at least 10 A3 work units with the passkey before you still start getting a bonus with the windows SMP client. Your video card will definately generate some good points, but it looks like you could maximize production by running the SMP client and GPU client together in Windows.
 
SMP + GPU. That will be the easiest to set up and the most ppd for you.
 
SMP + GPU. You can't do -bigadv, and neither can notfred, which negates that option. And Linux SMP is, if anything, slightly slower than Windows SMP now. Plus you don't get the extra overhead of the VM
 
Okay, another question to throw in the pot.

I have an extra 8800GTS G80 laying around. What problems would it create if I install it beside the 280 and put it to folding also?

if your using the phenom II go with the SMP A3 and gpu client.. the 955 will do about 6000-7000ppd with your overclock..

Completed 5000 of 50000 (1%) in 5 min 44 sec. Is that a decent time?
Have not installed the 8800 yet. wanted to get the SMP client in and make sure is is stable before I go getting crazy. If all goes well, I will install the card tomorrow night.

My P2 slightly overclocked at 3.5ghz(see my gaming rig in sig) was doing about 7000-8000 ppd using just the SMP client. It had a TPF of just over 5 minutes. I suspect that what you are experiencing is probably right around the ball park of what to expect since i'm also running DDR3 memory at 1600mhz. Once you get your two GPU clients up and running, you are going to sacrifice speed on your SMP client work units, but both graphics cards will net you far more points even when accounting for this loss from the SMP.

TPF looks about right.. i am doing 5:49 on 6012 and 6013 WU's so far running my phenom II 940 @ 3.6ghz.. the numbers will change around though.. depending on what im doing on the computer it will change from 5:45 to 6:09 TPF..
 
Well, The GTX280 is dead.:mad: 8800 in it's place while I wait for RMA.

SMP is somewhat flaky. Seems it will run for a few hours and either lockup or the machine will reboot for some reason. Have done some troubleshooting, but nothing stands out. I seriously doubt that heat is an issue. CPU cooler is a Gemini with a pair of CoolerMaster 120mm fans atop. Antec 900 case, so airflow is great. Memtest is flawless. 8GB kit of OCZ Platinum DR2-800.

Using an infrared non-contact thermometer, the base of the Gemini is reading 42.8C/109F
Northbridge HS is about the same at 108F
Heatsinks on the mem are at 40C/104F

I think I'm going to go back closer to stock clocks and see if it is more stable.
Any other suggestions?

Have you tried running just the SMP client without running the GPU client? At least this will allow you to eliminate one possibility. Give that a try before you start resorting to calling back the overclocks on your cpu. When the SMP client locks up, does it hardlock the system or does it just cause the client itself to crash?

When the experienced guys wake up in the morning, i'm sure they will be able to help you much better than me.
 
I've never had any problems with SMP2. Sometimes it gets a Protomol core but that's about the worst of its problems. As for the GTX280, it will be interesting to see what you get back. I hope you get back a GTX285, but to be frank, I think a GTX275 is probably more likely.
 
Well, at stock clocks it has been running without a glitch for almost 24 hours. I guess sunday when I get back, I will start taking them back up a little at a time. 11 minute time frames are not going to cut it. I know its a different WU, but 500MHz OC cut the TPF in half?
This is the 2nd WU in 24 hours with 11 minute TPF's.

3.6ghz will cut the WU time from 11 minutes to 5:40-5:50ish.. im doing between 5:42-6:09 with my phenom II 940 @ 3.6ghz..

just to give you an idea.. im doing 8:24 TPF's with the F@H client limited to 3 cores at 3.6ghz due to heat..

as far as your stability issues you may need a slight voltage increase.. i know i needed to with my 940 on the A3 WU's.. my 940 needed a whole .025v increase just to be stable.. but this board has absolutely shitty voltage regulation running 1.575v in bios but the chips actually running at 1.495v when under load..
 
Got it to 3.63 using 220 X 16.5 with a little voltage bump(1.4125) Mem 880MHz 6-6-6-18@2.1v, which is stock voltage for the OCZ Mem. :cool:

Running a 6059WU, getting 10:30ish TPF. :confused:

Now, HFM.net is broke. repaired, uninstalled, reinstalled, no good. I haven't a clue WTF broke it, but I am not in the mood to deal with it today. :confused:

I acquired me an EVGA GTX 295 CO-OP Edition and I don't have enough power supply to run the damn thing. Now I gotta wait another week for Newegg to get it here.

the TPF is way off you should be doing mch better then 10:30ish TPF.. my 940 @ 3.6ghz does 6:23 avg on that WU.. do you have anything running in the background using the cpu? is the cpu throttling due to temp?

im kind of curious why you used the HT(FSB) to overclock a black edition processor? why not use the cpu multiplier you should be able to get 3.8ghz no problem with a phenom II 955 if you have a decent heatsink..

whats broken on HFM? does it just not turn on?
 
I remembered that I had throttled back the SMP client to 50% for troubleshooting and forgot to reset it. I brought it back up to 90% and getting sub 6 min TPF's now.

Using multi only, it would randomly reboot after several hours. It could be the aforementioned power supply. Newegg has me a 1000W on the way. Anyway, I felt that by using the FSB too, that gets the Mem speed up @ same time. Mainly it is an experiment to see how far I can take it. Everything I have read says that this chip will not do over 3.7. If there is an article out there that says different, I would definately be interested in reading it.

The cooler is a Gemini or a Gemini II with 2 Cooler Master 120mm fans on it. Speedfan is reporting CPU temps at full(or 90%) burn at 45C.
