SMP client missing work files error

Approximately 50% of the time I shut down the SMP client and then reboot, upon restart I receive a 'missing work files' error and the client deletes the current WU while a new one is started. This never happens with the regular client. What if anything am I doing wrong when I shutdown the client? This issue has occurred on more than one machine and I have lost countless WUs because of it. Someone please tell me why a simple system restart should cause the SMP client to behave thus? Is this a result of its beta status quality/stability??

Three things to try.

First:-
I always make a backup of the whole folding folder either before I shut it down or right after I've shut it down.
That way I can restore if it goes wrong when I restart.

Second:-
Always use "Ctrl C" to shut the client down with.
Then either give the client time a few minutes to completely shut down or check in Windoze Task Manager that the four core have shut down before rebooting.

Third:-
Some boxen take a minute or so longer to load the drives & services needed to run the SMP client after booting.
If you try and start folding before they are all loaded it will fail.
Try letting the box sit for a minute or two after it finishes booting before starting the client.

Doing all that gives me a success rate of over 99%.
Then all you need to worry about are EUE's

Luck ............ :D

Thank you immensely, Tigerbiten. Everything you mentioned was unknown to me. Will try your suggestions next time. :)

Yes, Tigerbiten's advices is the same as mine and my success rate is also 99% on my 15 SMP boxes :)

I don't mean any disrespect to The Tiger, but since I follow the advice from above in #2 and #3 faithfully... I have never found a need to follow #1. In other words... I have never made copies of the folding folder. But I always do #2 and #3.

p.s. I always get some error messages about improperly shutting done the core for the last 8 times... but I ignore that, and everything seems to work okay.

#1 is much more important if your running two SMP clients on the same computer.
Then if you shut a single client down there is a good 50-50 chance that the second client will crash hoseing all the work files.
Hence backing up stuff before you shut the clients down.

The other thing to know is the action needed after a EUE.
Download and place Qfix into your folding folder from here
If you then get an EUE.
First check there is a results file in your work folder.
If there is then shut the client down.
Open a Command Prompt window.
Navigate to you folding folder.
Then run Qfix.
It will tell you if its has been able to fix the Queue.dat file.
Now shut the Command Prompt window and start the client.
It will now upload any fixed results.
This is important as it tell Stanford there may be a bad WU in the wild.
Also you will get some points for your work.

Now if your crunching the second or third copy of the same WU.
Shut the client down.
Delete the work folder and the queue.dat file.
Restart the client.
You should grab a new WU to crunch.

At the moment I'm running at less then 1 in a 100 EUE's per Work Units crunched.

Luck ............... :D

I'm only running 9 SMP boxen ..... :p
~17.5k per day.

I only follow #1 with my Windows SMP instances. My Linux clients never trash a work unit. They always start up fine from the last checkpoint.

I follow #2 and #3 on all of them.

Yep, same here. I never have trouble with the Linux SMP client. There have been a couple of times when either power went out or something else happened which caused the client to shut down improperly and it still recovered just fine.

I realize the Linux SMP client has actually been out longer, but considering the install base of Windows vs Linux for folding, you would think they would be doing a bit more work to the Windows SMP client to make sure it's as stable as they can get it.
