Smp and stalling..Linux questions

I have a couple boxen running vista and all is good. If I wanted to run Linux, which Distro would give similar results? I have never had a WU "hang" in the middle of a WU like I did when I was running Ubuntu 6.06. Vista has hung at 100% while ending mpi: linux has hung some times as much as 4 times in a work unit.
I have very limited times to monitor my boxen (15min in the morn, same at night) and I need them to be folding, not "hanging"
 
I use Suse when I'm running a linux folder. I had a Opteron @ 2.85 GHz running Suse10.1 and the SMP client. I sometimes went for a month or more without even checking on it.

That being said, most hangs in the SMP cleint are due to network connection interuptions.


 
I normally do not have any trouble. If I do have a problem with a WU hanging, it seems to have something to do with the current batch of WU's out at the time I think. I've had the Linux SMP client hang on me at different times for about a week straight before and then go for months without any trouble. The only thing I could ever think would cause this is something with the WUs I received.

The other thing could be something about the work files not being totally deleted. I know I've seen that a few times lately. I need to go into the folder and clean out the old work files so it doesn't have any trouble from that aspect. I know the old regular Windows console client would have trouble sometimes if old files were not cleaned up at the end of a WU like they were supposed to be. This could be a similar case.

 
I use Xubuntu for my SMP client....runs a pretty decent bit faster than my Vista client did, though I suspect it's more the OS instruction set than anything....only had it hang once in about 2 months, and a restart fixed that

Either the Linux client is more suited to SMP work units or it's because it's 64 bit only that I think makes the difference. At this time, the Linux SMP client only works on 64 bit OSes. Either way, it puts out a lot more PPD compared to the Windows SMP client.

yea i figure if anything they can at least double pump 32 bit instructions, if they aren't using pure 64 bit (which i suspect they are)....all things considered, it leaves much better precision for float based arithmetic in 64 bit
