Hey all,

I was working on a computer today, and I was switiching out the mainboard.

I pulled all of the USB, speaker, etc. wires out of the old mainboard, did the swap, then tried relocating them on the new one.

As I was doing this, I was gettng slightly flustered, as to where the mainboard on switch was. I attempted to put it in the right two pins, and I fired up the system. Nothing happened for about one minute, then it started running, but there seemed to be a harsh smell of burning carbon. I quickly halted everything.

Then I tried it again... And smoke started coming out the PSU... Now it's FUBAR.

I'm just wondering if it's possible to blast a PSU like that by misaligning the pins to the mobo. My friend told me it can't really be done, but I'm just not sure.

Any takers?

Did you move the PSU? And then, in moving it it somehow got bumped and things that weren't supposed to touch touched and then, when you booted up it was short circuiting so the heat just build up then you got your problem? I'm sure somebody will come and tell me how wrong I am pretty soon...

Well, I'm also thinking that the new mainboard I added used the 20 pin connector, plus the 4 pin connector.

It may have been too much for the old PSU.

POS....
