i tried to set up my MBP to a windows workgroup, but when i went into the directory access thing, the SMB option wasnt there. am i missing something?

System Preferences > Network > Advanced > WINS tab to enter the workgroup name

System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing > Options check SMB.

when i put in the workgroup name and ip and then close the window it loses the info. when i reopen it there is nothing there :/

O well I have no idea what you're setup is like then. Maybe you can give a detailed explanation of what you are trying to do so we can help.

i have a windows computer with hamachi set up to run a VPN. i already have another computer set up with hamachi that has successfully transferred files to and from the main pc's drive. i have installed hamachiX on my mac laptop and i need to get the mac onto the windows workgroup.

yes they are. one is our home office computer (pc) which is doubling as a "server" thanks to our 2x1TB external HDDs . the other is a coworkers home computer (pc) and the third (and actually fourth, but its a mac laptop also) is my laptop which i have on me always when im out and about which is usually most of the day.

Check to make sure the connections are all working by trying to connect to a SMB share. Go > Connect to Server > smb://<server ip>/share

so i typed in that address but it says connection failed. So whats the disconnect thats going on? im not familiar with mac so i dont really understand whats happening. thanks!

My original instructions for setting the Mac on the windows workgroup still hold true, and you are going to have to do that before they will connect via Hamachi. I'm not sure why the settings are "disappearing".
