I am looking to build a Hyper-V 2012 R2 lab for our department so we can virtualize some old desktops that we still use, as well as use this lab for testing different applications. Keeping this separate from our production Hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Cluster is the reason I want a new box.

I am struggling with the decision of buying hardware or building from scratch. I have been looking at tower and also rack servers, leaning towards tower because I find them easier to work on (and I could keep it in my office). But I am not opposed to rack mount.

The host would not be used for anything heavy or anything production, so it would not need to be best-in-class.

I was thinking 2x quad core CPU and somewhere between 32-64 GB RAM. For storage I would use local storage and use Windows Server Storage Spaces.

What would you recommend? Can I get what I need for under $2,000?

Thanks :D
