So I brought Smash Brawl to my nephew's place today. Unfortunately, his machine was not able to play this. His Wii is from Japan, but has never had issues playing US games before. Does anyone know a workaround for this?

My wii had to update before it would even read the disk. After that it worked fine been playing it for 6 hrs straight just now time for a break lol :S

My friend's Wii from launch day would not play Brawl so he got the repair form and will ship it out.

This was a guy who checked Sakurai's daily Brawl update website constantly too :/
Needless to say, you didn't want to irk him that day.

If its from Japan do you know if it is moded or not? As such the new update might be deteting a mod. Otherwise it might be an issue with its online mode looking for the American settings and finding Japanese ones? Could be any number of issues, or just a randomn unlucky one :(

does his Wii have access to the internet? My Wii would not read the disc untill I updated, after that it was fine.

My wii is absolutely NOISY when reading SSBB. It's maddening. Noticed that on my cousin's wii as well. Can't believe there's that much data to be read off it.

Not sure if his wii was modded or not, just that it was a Japanese version.

He never uses the online capability so he did not have the ability to update.

well I'd suggest gettig his Wii hooked up to the internet and downloading the patch

Launch day Wii, loaded up, updated, runs fine here. Lots of fun, though still get pummeled by my kids....

Gotta love that Nintendo really takes care of it's customers. Every time there's a problem, no questions asked ( or very few in this case ), just send it in and you get taken care of.

Some Wii consoles won't play the game. Something to do with a dirty lens, but they are repairing them. I'm just glad mine is working fine:D

I thought that the update required to play the game was included on the disc? it had me run through an update in the CD channel before it would fire up the game, and I did the online update.

Many of the updates break mod chips, or so the updates say. It may have something in there that detects mods and just doesn't play, as this is one of their big sellers.

I didn't think you could play a different regions games without a mod...at least, you never have been able to before.

i thought wiis from one region can only play that region's games. so that means that your friend probably has a modded wii or you wouldn't be able to play US games on it

This is what happens when you make stupid fucking "Wii means penis!" jokes, alright?

Yea same here. Updated off the disk and have played it for 6 hours or so for the last 2 days. I would have been pissed if they wanted me to send it in for a drive cleaning.

Wow - looks like someone hit a sensitive spot there. Or is your sense of humor broken?

When someone drops what is pretty much a racial joke you can always expect someone to be angry. Best thing to do is avoid them(the people making the joke and the people responding to it)

My nephew's won't play the game either. Nintendo made a claim saying that it's a dirty lense but you have to send it in to clean it. It doesn't make sense why you would have to send it in to clean it but whatever. My nephew is just going to use it extended warranty to swap his Wii out for a new one.

Can you find one in your area to get it swaped out though? I was under the impression they are still hard to find(mine is a launch one so it isn't like I have kept up on finding them)

My zealous Brawl friend's wii was unmodded and fully updated and connected to the internet. It's the US version. Still doesn't work with brawl since its a double layer disc and the lens is dirty so it has trouble reading the deeper layer..

They want you to send it in because there are so many people who could screw up their Wii. You probably don't want to stick a cloth in there and just prod around. So you'd open it up (void warranty?) and clean the lens. The Nintendo folks probably just use a microfiber cloth or air to clean the lens but one significant scratch and you can brick your wii with disc read errors.

True - but how many Wii threads have you seen without the obligatory body part jokes?

Anyway, no probs reading my disc - it's not a launch day console - picked it up May of last year.
