I have a 9800XT and have been poking around the driver settings trying to figure them out. The SMARTGART tab has the option of AGP Off, 1X, 2X, 4X, 8X. 1X and 2X are grayed out and it is set to Off. Fastwrite is grayed out and set to Off. When I try to set AGP to 8X I have to reboot but when I check back AGP is off. How can I set AGP to 8X? Or is should it be off? Can anyone explain SMARTGART to me and what my settings should be.

My system is,

Asus P4C800 E Deluxe
P4 2.8 800fsb
2GB Corsair xms 3200 4x512
ATI 9800XT
watercooled

I had the same problem with my old P4 sytem. You need to update your chipset drivers and that will fix the issue and it will allow you use APG 8X in the Smartgart tab.

I've encountered the same problems in the past, but shrugged it off. Which chipset drivers? I can only assume the Intel chipset or the motherboard because the Catalyst drivers are the problem.

Your motherboard chipset drivers, Install them.

Go to Intel's site to get the latest INF file.

Thanks Brent. Chipset drivers took care of things.

I'm the first one that suggested you install your motherboard chipset driver but since Brent told you to do it you actually go and do it..;)
