Hello. I have a Maxtor 250gb ATA hdd with 8mb cache. I think its a Maxtor MaxLine Plus II 250GB disk. Im not sure because im writing this at my college and it is my home pc hdd. It has a SMART warning when i boot up my pc. It says bad hdd, backup and replace. Usually how long does last before it fails completely? The hdd is about 1 month old and ive been running it 24/7. I hope that it can last for at least another 2 weeks before it fails.

And another question. If i RMA my disk, how long usually it would thank for Maxtor to send me a replacement?

I had a WD caviar do that in my 'rents computer. SMART warning then blammo, no HDD.

Do what it says, back it up and replace it (RMA it in your case). Theirs lasted just a few days. They got the warnings, I ordered a drive from the 'egg, replaced it and used it in my system to see when it would finally die. It died with a sound I have only heard in cartoons... (SPPRRROOOIIIIIINNGGG!!!!). After the noise, BIOS wouldnt even pick it up.

Time about 8 days in my case, YMMV.

timeframe from immediately to well past the expected lifespan of the HDD (a few years from now)
best thing to do would be to run the manufacturers diagnostic, of course since its a remote, youd need assistance

as far as backup goes, you should already have backup :p

its even possible its not the HDD, could be power, a bad cable or loose connection, fuxored busmaster driver ect.
you just dont know till you crosspart to known good components, if the drive still fails a diagnostic then its time for RMA

Thanks guys for the reply. Ive already made backup and ill hang to this hdd till it breaks because i just can live without my pc :D . Hopefully it can last till the end of the months so i can buy a small temporary hdd till i get my replacement because my budget is tight now.
