drizzit is right ... run a benchmark (there are 100's) before turning off SMART on your hard drives. Then reboot, turn it off, and benchmark again.

All modern hard drives monitor several performance aspects about themselves. SMART is simply a way of presenting this data in a somewhat standardized fashion so it can be used. SMART is a polled protocol. Meaning that while your HD is always monitoring itself, SMART data will only be returned when a application polls the drive for it.
The setting in your BIOS causes SMART status for all drives to be polled ONCE during boot-up. SMART status is not polled again unless you run a program that does it.
Polling for SMART doesn't take longer than any other read request.... So unless you have a program polling for SMART every 10 seconds I don't possibly see how it could be detrimental to performance in any way.
