I think it mostly depends on motherboard/controller support. I know that on my Abit IP35-pro, I was not able to figure out how to read SMART data or enable hot swap for the internal SATA regardless of mode set in the BIOS (IDE/AHCI/RAID).
Perhaps your motherboard came with a disk utility?
I was hoping that there would be a universal utility considering my RAID runs straight off of the Southbrige (it is a intel based chip). I still have not had any luck and have been trying all day!
