SMART failing hard drive?

I have a Sony VAIO system which has been booting up into the Windows 8 operating system with a SMART hard drive failure. The system boots up fine but is very slow which leads me to believe the hard drive failure is imminent (as the message says lol).

Anyway, what is my best option to back up and get back the system the way it currently is? I've attached a backup large USB drive and I'm using the Windows backup application to back up everything to this external drive. Would the next option be to remove the hard drive, replace it with something else and then restore the data from the backup?

Would I be installing the original operating system normally to the new hard drive and then using the restore app to bring everything back?

Is there a better way (clone?)...

To move your existing OS to a new HD, you could try HDClone Free Edition, a google search will pull it up. Seems like just what you're looking for.

However, it's often a good idea to reinstall your OS from scratch every couple years at least. If you have the original windows8 install CD, just put a new HD in the place of your old one in the pc, put your old drive in the external drive case, and copy what you need off it after you've installed windows on the new drive.

Thanks -- I think part of the issue is that there are a lot of apps that are currently installed; I don't think they can be just copied over? I.e. they would need to be reinstalled one by one, settings reset to the originals, etc.
 
The Vaios also usually have a crapload of drivers that aren't native on the MS install DVD, so if you can still successfully read your current drive that would be the best way to go. There are a number of free clone apps out there (clonezilla is a good one for example) which will make exact copies to a new drive. If you can afford the $$$ and/or size difference, go to a SSD (You'll never look back once)!
