It seems most PC internal optical drives are still around the 148Wx42Hx170D dimensions that they have been for years. Is there a smaller alternative available? A laptop-size drive with SATA connectors would be ideal.
 
you can purchase laptop dvd burners and adapter for sata . thats smallest you going to get

Slot load is quite sexy indeed. A bit pricey but well worth it IMO
 
Sucks how the blu-ray slim-slot-load ones aren't being made anymore. And sadly there are only a handful of slim-bluray drives.
 
Slim notebook drives are all basically the same length and width, which is about as small as you can go given the size of an optical disc. Thickness is one area where there's some flexibility, and in that regard the thinnest drive I've ever heard of is the 7mm Matsushita (Panasonic) UJ-844 Multi Drive.
