Smaller, similiar HSF to 212+

Hello,

I have finally gotten all my parts for my build, but as I'm looking at it, it doesn't seem the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ will fit on my mobo and in my case. It might, but I really don't want to put it together, with the grease et. al, then find out I can't get the side on and most likely feel bad about returning it, if Microcenter will take it.

So what HSF for my 1155 i7-2600k is similar performance-wise, but a few millimeters smaller top to bottom?

I am hoping to purchase at Microcenter as I have to bring the Hyper212+ back and want to get the build done this weekend. Sigh.

Thanks very much!

Why not try to put it on without the grease and try that? I don't know if it will fit but the Corsair A70 is similar in terms of price and performance range.

If you are really space limited you might look into one of the all-in-one water coolers like the H60. They don't perform any better than the 212+, but they do put the large parts (the radiator) in less constrained spaces.

Would help to know what Case you have. Otherwise, you can always get a top down fan HSF, not a heat spreader vertical fan type.

It's an NZXT 210 Elite case going on a P8Z68-V LX board.

Anyone put one in that case yet?

It may fit by a couple of mm's after everything is bolted down, but it's definitely going to be close.

I have the stock HSF that came with the i7-2600K. How bad could it be? Lol

Thanks for the help.

As far as I can tell it will fit fine, I've seen a few builds listed around with the 212+ in a 210 elite.

As Hatsu suggested, do a quick and dirty run to test size. Put the mobo against the mounting plate on the case, put the 212+ against it, and see if it protrudes past where the side panel will be.

Otherwise, if you don't plan on overclocking your 2600k, the stock HSF works fine. You only really need an aftermarket HSF if you plan on overclocking past, say, 4.0 GHz.

Thanks.

I think it'll fit but just barely. One of the heat pipes that protrude from the top is a little taller than the others. I suppose I could file those down a millimeter or two.

Thermal grease. Just a single "rice-line" squirt needed, or should I do something else? The instructions on the 212+ have a diagram of covering the entire contact plate with grease. I was looking at that and thinking WTF?

What is the consensus with i7 and modern heatsinks?

Thanks!

Put a blob, or line, and then use the pressure of the heatsink to spread it.
