Small or Large?

I was looking into getting an external hard drive; but I'm not sure if I should get 2x500 GB, or go with just 1x1 TB external?

I'm looking for reliability and my hard disc not failing o_o. I've had that happen too many times on my desktop with an internal hard drive. Also, what brand would you recommend for reliability?

You are safer with 2x500gb drives and cost per byte may be cheaper than 1tb. Either way, it's a good idea that the enclosure have built in fans as these things can heat up and die rather quickly in non ventilated cases.
