Nvidia has lost my respect. I purchased an 8800gtx the other night only to install it and find out it's worthless on HDTVs (40" Samsung 1080p) I read so much about the 8800's I cant believe I didnt realize the drivers did not support TV Monitors. So Nvidia continues to Rape for Mega Bux, as they are entitled to, They've had the biggest dog on the block for a year now, yet they cant figure out how to make drivers.. PATHETIC!
I've been an ATI fan for years and I hate to see them coming up so short against the 8800 series but the facts are what they are.. However I continue to give ATI a thumbs up for the general quality of the drivers and the user friendlyness that are associated with them. The whole Nvidia control panel was a fuq'n joke. Forgive my little vent session :) Now it's another 40 miles back to Fry's for a return, and God only knows what that will cost, I cant walk out of there with out buying something. Peace!!

I'm using the latest drivers. I prob. should have been more specific about the problem. No matter what I try, I simply cannot get the desktop to fit my screen. The desktop is always bigger than the screen. I cant even see the "start button" on the taskbar, I can barely see it at very low resolution. I read the page you linked, however it didnt seem to adress the problem I'm describing. Thanks!

Literally hundreds, likely thousands of people are using 8800 GTXs without issue on 1080p TVs. The issue isn't really with nVidia so much as the lack of proper drivers giving refresh rates and such for 1080p TVs from their manufacturers. It's complicated and frustrating for the end user in many cases, but you /can/ get these things to work properly, either by making your own display INF with PowerStrip or a similar program and the tech manual for your TV, or via the 'scaling' option in the nVidia control panel.

Please be more specific about the driver. Latest WHQL driver? Latest beta? 163.22, 163.44, 163.67? Something else?

I have the latest WHQL drivers on a 7300LE driving a 1080i HDTV with my HTPC. I had to use the slider control to get everything to fit properly, but it looks pretty good IMO.

Your issue is most likely not the card... Its probably the TV...

Make sure your TV is set to a Full Pixel to Pixel setting. By Default most 1080P TV's are not and are set to zoom in a bit... For reference this happened to a guy when he first bought a 32 Inch Sharp 32 Inch TV.... He swore up and down the TV was crap until he found the setting on the TV to correct this (I also own that TV and can say that I've seen numerous posts about this problem on all different brands and sets of HDTV's)...

For reference sake her is the guys post (with pictures so you can have a comparison to your current issue).[

And this is not something any graphics card has a setting to over ride, the card is sending a 1080P signal and it is being received by the monitor, its just the monitor / TV's settings that need adjustment.

Hope this helps,
Fred

Using the latest WHQL. (162.18) Those are the drivers Nvidia pointed me to on the "download drivers" page. Thanks again for your help.

It's probably something with your TV. Try playing around with the settings to see if you have a 1:1 or "dot by dot" mode. I'm running an 6600GT and I can get 1080p perfect on my 32" so I really don't think the GTX is at fault here.

I guess what I'm confused about is.. Why does everything work perfect with my ATI cards and drivers? I've used 1900xt and many versions of drivers over the last several months and I'm using a 1950xtx with many versions over the last couple of months.. The desktop alway fits just like any normal monitor. I really have a lot of experience with this kinda stuff, so I feel funky being so ignorant all the sudden..
btw.. I did look through all my tv settings and found nothing that helped.

Also the latest beta drivers (which tend to yield the best results *TEND*) are 163.67. Guru3d tends to have links to download those drivers. Here is a link to their 32 bit driver section Guru 3D Link

Not sure if I should thank you or curse you... Now I will be up the next couple of hours reinstalling the card and trying out new drivers.. LOL.. thanks for all the help!

I would like to believe help around here is a mutual understanding. We all have had experience in all different types of brands and technologies.

Please update us on how your situation turns out.

Some other guy in the forum was having the same problem you were. He had to change drivers to a old one to get it fit into his screen.

Yeah, sometimes older drivers will help with resolution problems. What connection to the HDTV are you using; HDMI, DVI, etc.?

If your HDTV has multiple connections, have you tried any of the others?

I just recently ordered a card (similar to the one in Marvelous' sig) with a HDMI port on it. It may not be an 8800, but if you aren't gaming on it, that card might actually help you (assuming you use HDMI).

Marvelous: Once I get my new card, it's going to pwn yours!!!!1 lol :D

Actually, once I get it I'm going to test out it's HDMI on a HDTV (1080i) and see how well the quality actually is. Go MSI

My TV has an HDMI port. My 7950 GX2 has a DVI port. I just use a DVI to HDMI cable... Works like a charm :)

Same here.. Dvi to Hdmi. I tried the new beta drivers with no luck. still cant get the desktop right. I will stick with my 1950xtx for now, I've still yet to come across anything that I cant play maxed out @ 1920x1080. I must say, I really prefer ATI's control panel interface and settings over Nvidia's. Guess I'm just used to it after so many years.. So, what will ATI do now after the 2900? LOL.. I appreciate all the help and responses.
Peace!!

I had the same problem when I switched from my 9800 Pro to my GTS 640MB. You're supposed to use the component dongle with your card. Then, you'll probably just need to resize your desktop through the Nvidia control panel.
