Small high performing drive?

I built a computer that I brought with me to college, and I am having a problem with a game that loads slowly. The problem is - my drives here at home bench 4 times faster than the drive at school. I'm looking for something external - is there an external drive that is relatively cheap and fast? I already tried my flash drive - it's only worse. The game is under 500MB
 
Depends on what drive you're talking about (on the school computer). If it's an older 5400 or 7200 RPM unit, then chances are good that fast interfaces like eSATA and IEEE-1394(a) or (b) aren't available. USB 2.0 isn't bad either, but USB 1.1 is unacceptable. Most likely, you won't succeed in speeding up loading times appreciably, but first we need to know what drives are found on the school computer, and which interfaces are available (USB, FireWire, etc.)
 
The drive is an IBM Deskstar, 40GB 7200RPM Drive. The motherboard site lists the board as USB 2.0. I can install a Firewire card if I need to.
 
if it's only 500mb, you might be better off getting more ram. theoretically windows will cache everything that gets read. so if you're revisiting the same area and that has to be loaded from disk multiple times, ram will increase the speed a good bit. but if you're progressing in the game, and loading the levels once a session, it's best to go with a disk like the wd2500ks or whatever that one is. if you want external, usb2 will be simplest, but if you don't need external internal will probably be faster.
