I have a 140mm case fan as a side intake, and it's just a tad loud.

I was thinking about soldering a resistor to it, see if it'll quiet down a little with that.

Would it be as simple as it sounds? Or is there more to a fan that I need to watch out for or something?
 
that ought to do the trick, you would cut the 'hot' wire (ground should work, too, come to think of it) and solder the resistor in-line.

PC RESISTOR FAN
BLACK ================

Make sure you either tape or heat-shrink the wires yadda, etc.

Don't forget to get different values of resistor for different effects.


An alternative, if the fan connects to one of the four-pin Molex connectors, is to move the ground for the fan from the Ground pin in the Molex to the +5, making it 7v across the fan instead of 12.

These are all pretty nasty hacks, and could quite easily go Very Wrong. Use at your own risk, the 'proper' thing to do is install a fan controller or get a quieter fan.
 
Yea the fan is molex powered, and that sounds interesting too, I just don't want to turn this into something bigger, it's just a fan after all.

I have resistors readily available though, so I thought, why not. And yes i should have some heatshrink available.

Ok so it does sound simple enough, I'll see how it goes. thx for the help.
