I have a copy of each, both were free and all I use it for is file storage, SVN repo, ect...

Is there is major reason to upgrade and move my data from a SMS 2008 VM to a Server 2012 VM?

The Data Drives are each on their own Virtual Disk.

The management and storage improvements in 2012 are awesome.

DFS improvements, new SMB 3.0, new NFS

Server 2012 is much better for storage
 
SBS has a lot of crap running on it just for a file server. I would switch to 2012; you can create a data volume and enable deduplication.
