Slow USB drive reads

I can write to my external WD 250 GB drive just fine. When I read from it, though, it is really slow. Sometimes it appears to lock up. It has the same behavior when I hook it up to other computers. Anything I can do to fix this? One theory I have is that the Win XP SP2 install screwed it up.

I also have similar experience. My Maxtor drive in a firewire enclosure suddenly reads very slowly although writing is normal. I finally succeeded on transfering the data in it to another drive (that took about a couple of day total  ) Currently I'm running Maxtor's diagnostic utility extended test to see if I can get some error code and it's been running for more than 24 hours now without any sign of finishing. The quick test showed no error albeit running very slow.
I'm afraid there's nothing I can do about the drive other than waiting for it to eventually failed completely. I don't have Windows XP however and I'm mildly concerned about the enclosure killing the drive :(.
Anybody else have any insight to this problem?

No, I don't think I can blame WinXP. I attached the drive to win2000 box and same thing. I am tempted to break it open, then attach the hard drive to a computer and see how it works then. I am hoping it is the enclosure and not the harddrive that is bad. If thats the case, maybe I can get another enclosure and slap the hard drive back into it.

In my case, the problem exists both with the firewire enclosure and connected directly with IDE. It has finally finished with the extended diagnostic and it shows that it passed . This is after more than 24 hours of testing. I know it's a long test but not that long... Maybe I should e-mail Maxtor.
