For some reason the transfer rate from my CD drive to my HD is incredibly slow .. this use to not be the case .. the setup when it worked fine is as follows ..

CD-RW & DVD-ROM on one IDE channel

HD & Zip Drive on the other IDE channel

then my DVD drive decided to crap out, so I took it out, along with my Zip drize since I didn't need it any more, then I put in an old 5GB HD for a little extra space .. my setup now is ..

CD-RW & 5GB Drive on one IDE Channel

HD on other IDE Channel

now since the CD and HD are on different channels the transfer rate should be fine .. any ideas ?

Equipment is as follows ..

HD = Western Digital Cavier 80GB 7200RPM 8MB Buffer
CD-RW = Sony 40X
OS = XP Pro .. Clean of Spyware/Viruses

all other info is in the sig ..

thanks for any help guys

make sure that controller channel has DMA enabled, and if it does, try it with the 5 gig disconnected. maybe it is interfering somehow. if it is, make sure it is not on "cable select"

shouldn't my devices all be on Cable Select ? or should I designate them Master/Slave ?

also the Master is at the end of the cable, and the Slave is the middle one correct ?

one last thing .. I just ordered another DVD drive .. so once it arives should I set everything up like ..

Primary IDE Channel: 80GB HD and 5GB HD
Secondary IDE Channel: CD-RW and DVD-ROM

my OS and programs and whatnot are all on my main SCSI drive .. so this is all mainly storage .. and some games are installed on the 80GB HD ..

thanks for any help

it does not matter which one is where on the cable, as long as one is master and the other is slave.

cable select can cause trouble and it is not [H]ard to use it :)

as for having 4 devices i would put the 2 most used ones on separate channels.

sometimes SCSI + IDE can cause mysterious slowdownd that are hard to track down.

I just checked everything a bit ago .. and it's all setup right .. Master/Slave settings .. hopefully everything will work out once I get my DVD drive back in ..

thanks for the [H]elp bro

when you get that dvd drive it, i would just remove the 5gb drive from your system. Putting slower devices on the chanel will slow down the speed of the 80gb hard drive

didn't think about that .. maybe I'll go search for an equally fast small drive .. thanks for the heads up
