Slow SATA HDD

I just bought a brand new WD Caviar 250 GB SATA HDD. I hooked everything up, installed XP but now everything moves asshole slow. My mouse is lagging, my keyboard is lagging, any sound that plays skips. I had 2 other SATA drives in the past and I have had the same exact problems. I have never had a problem with IDE drives. To boot up my computer takes at least 3 - 5 minutes with the SATA. Is there anyway to fix this problem?

Do you have your drives jumper settings correct? Does your motherboard support SATA or are you using a controller card? If your using a controller card did you install the software that came with it? And if your mouse is lagging im not sure thats due to the hard drive cause i boot computers with a stripped down version of Longhorn Server 2007 from a usb drive and things work just fine.

I fixed the problem. I had to update my BIOS. Somehow, my motherboard has the hookups for SATA, but they don't work properly unless you flash the BIOS. Before I never seen SATA in the hardware list on the BIOS screen, now it is there. Everything is working as it should now.
