Slow performance when trying to access hard drives in raid 1 array.

Specs:

Motherboard:
ASUS P8z68-vLE
RAID Card:
Rosewill RC-216 PCI Express eSATA II x 2 / ATA 133 x1 RAID 0/1/0+1/JBOD mode Controller Card
HDDs
1 x 120 gb M4 SSD
2 x 320 gb Hitachi 7200 rpm HDD in RAID 1

Problem:
When ever I try to access my HDD in RAID 1 I get very slow performance. Same thing happen when I try to search my whole computer. Before my current build I used this same raid card on my old mother board, but the card served as a raid setup for my main drives (No ssd just the two Hitachis).
i.e. When I type into the search bar under start it takes a long time for the results to display (6 to 10 seconds)
i.e. 2 when ever I click on the hard drive under my computer (or any shortcut that I have on my desktop that is linked to the raid 1 array), it takes 6 to 10 seconds for the contents to pop up.

I have games and video on this HDD. Once I actually get to them they open fine and run fine.

Anything I can do to fix this?

Alright. I know I am doing something wrong, but I am unsure of it.

I just bought my first SSD. I am using it as my boot drive and I am trying to use 2x 320gb HDD as my storage drives.

I setup the SSC in AHCI (default). When I switch the AHCI to RAID and boot it prompts me to set up my RIAD. I setup the RAID and it start. When the four balls fly in it BSODs every time.

What am I doing wrong?

MoBo - ASUS P8Z68-V LE
M4 128gb SSD sata 6.0gbs
2 x Hitachi Deskstars HDD 320gbs stata 3.0gbs

I suppose my first question is why are you even using the Rosewill card. You should connect your SSD to one of the intel 6gb ports, and your 2 spinning disks to 2 of the intel 3gb ports and use the bios to create the mirror. You will get much better performance using ports that come off the CPU and PCH instead of going across the bus to a really crappy jmicron controller.
 
Yes, that is because of the change from IDE to AHCI. Trust me, reinstall Win7 on your SSD. Clear out all the old crap and make sure it is ssd enabled. Trust me, the speed and reliability (the jmicron controller sucks) differential will be worth it for the inconvenience of the reinstall.

So I should change the drive type from AHCI to RAID than re-install windows on the SSD?

Set the SSD as AHCI (Intel 6gbps ports) and the RAID mirror as RAID (Intel 3gbps ports). If the board doesn't let you differentiate the two sets of ports, set the single choice to RAID, and just set the SSD as a non-raid/single/passthrough drive and the 2 hdds are a RAID1 set.
 
Just checked and it does not let me differentiate. Three options under STAT configuration or IDE, AHCI, or RAID.

I'm going to order me some new RAID drives soon and give this a shot. I didn't think at first it would be my card since I use to not have any problems with it on my last build, but the more I think about the more I think it is probably the problem!

It could be the card, but it might not be. Another thought.... The -10 seconds that it waits after you try to access it could be the drives spinning up and coming active because the array went to sleep and spun down. That is about the amount of time you would expect it to take. If you are running Win7 go to Control Panel > Power Options and click change plan settings on the selected plan (probably Balanced or High Performance). Next click change advanced power settings, and expand Hard Disk in the list. Expand Turn Of Hard Disk in the list, and make sure it is set to never. After this, you have to see if you have any Asus power saving options in either the bios or in one of their utils (EPU, Asus Suite II, etc), which could also be forcing the hard disks to spin down for lack of activity. Next time after you haven't accessed the array for an hour or so and you would expect to have the problem, listen closely and see if you hear the drives spin up when you access the volume.

I think this is going to be it!

I looked at the settings and it was set to turn off after 20mins! I did not have an option to turn off so I sett it to 99,999 mins.

I'm going to let it sit for awhile and check again. I think this will fix it though!
