Im in the Uk and iv got Bt broadband option 3. With an advertised UPTO 8Mb service. WHen i recently moved home, they said my adsl line supported 6Mb which i thought was fairly decent. Now im here im only getting 1.8Mb speeds. Which considerin im payin for 8Mb is pretty piss poor in my opinion. Is there a lower limit to what they can provide before they have to do somethin to up my speed or am i stuck in a contract with a shoddy service for the next 12 months?

No im not measuring anything different. The hub i have got measures connection speed. Before i moved house it was 8,096kbps. Now its 1,856kbps

Not changed anything except place of residence. After that it all went to hell. Tried callin them. the woman on the line barely spoke english and said she couldnt do anythin about it. Im sure theres a lower limit to the service they gotta provide. Like i said. Im on a 12 month contract. After thats up... im off!

Sorry to hear of your speed problems, I can sympathise.

Dont get Virgins broadband though, I am a long time sufferer of theirs!
The support is poor unless you to phone the pay line when you dont/shouldnt need to.
They send canned responses and quite often send them again even after pointing out they cant possibly be part of the issue.
If you have a connection or speed issue, they make you perform tests which are only used to validate whether they should tell you to phone the support pay line.
They refuse point blank to pass on the information to the pay line support people stating they dont have email contact lol.

They refuse to support email problems if you use Outlook and only support Outlook Express as a PC client.
I have been made aware of 2 emails that didnt get to their destination in the last 4 months and am missing 2 emails that should have arrived a few days ago!
Recently, emails have been taking around 5 hours to be received at either end.
Most times when there is a problem, the service status doesnt show it, even when its undoubtable that everyone has the problem! Letting them know doesnt help.

My last 10 or so support issues related to speed, email and reliability have not had any resolution and sometimes at peak times, Broadband it is so slow its a joke - down to 40kbit/s !!
I am currently getting 1mbit at 10pm, I count that as lucky :)

Even if its not their problem you might never know as the staff are too inept to find out unless you pay extra for support. Whether it then gets any resolution is unknown as I have refused to pay extra for support when they claim its included in the package.
They have a Browser chat client to talk to an engineer online but the webpage always returns an error that the service is not available. I have told Virgin about this many times but they havent tried once to help with it.

I want to change ISP and wash my hands of them but the nightmare of losing my email address is going to be really tough to deal with.
With the monthly contract (which costs 20% more than the 1 year contract) they still charge a £50 fee to migrate to another ISP. 3 months broadband with Unlimited Broadband Plan 2 costs £54 so thats almost a 1/4 year fee to quit them with a monthly account!

I'm hoping that the change to Virgin Media will fix things but it hasnt yet.
Oh yeah, if you want to get the TV service, you either need Freeview or Cable, its not available forBroadband only customers.
Virgin recently lost the ability to show major Sky channels so its not a full replacement for Sky.

Good luck getting a decent ISP for your area :)

Virgin sometimes kicks ass. I can get 20mb down any day but upload shits the bed at 20k :(.
Have you got the new Virgin modem as some of the old NTL ones could only do a little less than 1mb.

Do you download over 350mb a day? The cap your "unlimited" internet to between 50 and 75%.

OP - Have you got a Reptle.

If BT's crap box is reporting that speed then they are not keeping to their end of the contract and you have the advantage BUT get another site to run a test, Numion only takes 20 seconds and is VERY accurate

lol, I forgot about the download cap, that makes it even more laughable.
They must apply a x10 version cap only at peak times as outside that I can get over 6Mbit on an 8MBit connection.
Strangely, I get 42K upload all the time, any time, it never falters, just the download is bad.

They told me politely a while back to stick to 40GB per month to allow customers to get a good service.
I complied and am always under 40GB but the service still sucks :D

nenu: Same deal. upload is constant. Download sucks ass. Iv never broken the 40Gb limit so it shouldnt have anythin to do with that.

RoBo. Yeah i have reps. Got 3 Corn Snakes, 1 Royal Python, And 4 Leopard Gecko's.

Numion reported my line speed as 1.3 mbit/s so thats worse than what Bt's crap box reports!

The contract says UPTO 8 mbit/s. So whats the lower limit?
