Slow file sharing

A client of mine is complaining of slow searches on his networked folder on another computer which is running windows server 2008 and acting as a file sharing machine. The happens to all 10 computers in the office. He has Time Warner 50mbs download service. I read synmantec a/v can cause this but we are not running this software. When searching the folder it says "not responding" Im lost as to what it can be.

Check the network traffic on the accessing computer, then diagnose network problems. I've gotten that before where the server was being REALLY slow to process the requests for no good reason, so the desktop client would hang.
