Slow boot on gateway

I have this second hand gateway GM5472 and it takes forever to boot. One thing particularly bugs me when you first press the power button the light for power just blinks on and off several times for what seems to be about 20 seconds. Then finally it actually starts to do something. Does anyone know if there is a way to stop this or what it means or is it normal?
