Slot loading cd/dvd drives

I have a Pioneer DVD-Rom drive that is a slot-loader like a car cd player. It is sweet as hell but I wonder why no one else manufactures cd/dvd burners and such this way. I don't think you can even buy the Pioneer ones any more. They were so much sweeter than the traditional tray based models.

The slot loaders had problems where if the drive was tilted (or placed in the veritcal position) the disc would get stuck inside. Although I'm not sure how many people actually move their computer while it's working although I do load discs if my case is on its side (when i'm working on the inside).

Also, they're pretty dangerous.

Just in the past 3 days, I saw 2 differnet posts with pics of discs shattering inside the drives. Imagine those shards flying out of the drive, at just about head level, and you'll see why the manufacturers aren't willing to make them.

Maybe if they made them with a little internal door that was on the inside of the drive, that would slide up to allow the disc to pass through the slot, then it would be cool.

Oh yeah, if you really really really want slot load drives, look on eBay. There's lotsa people selling slot load laptop drives in CDROM, CDRW, DVDROM, CDRW/DVDROM, and DVDRW.
