I just bought a pc for $40 dollars it came with memory and two proccesors
c2_1_b.JPG

its a Tyan S1836 {thunder 100}

The proccesors it came with are two pentium 2 proccesors at 450 mhz {kinda weak}

so i want to kick it up a notch and put in two celeron 766 mhz proccesorshere

My question is where can i get a slocket that would work with this and would the upgrade be worth it in terms of speed and would it actually work

btw manual for the mobo is here

buy some p3 sockets instead. You might not be able to get those celery's working in SMP

Check www.geeks.com they usually have a wide selection of new and used processors
as well as a bunch of other stuff that might be usefull. Good luck with your upgrading.

thanx so much this site has them for under 15 bucks

Edit: i have a 100 mhz fsb so not alot actually will work

Is it the 440BX or GX version? The GX supports larger RAM modules.

Also, the 440BX will do 133FSB, however it does not support a 1:2 FSB/AGP divider, so your AGP card will run at 88.88MHz if the system runs at 133FSB. It does support a 1:4 PCI ratio, so a PCI video card is recommended if you attempt to get it going @ 133FSB.

The SCSI HBA on that hot rod is virtually bullet proof and works with just about anything. The motherboard itself is also rock solid stable. I have had one folding 24/7 with a pair of PIII 550s for months now. Not a hiccup in stability, ever. The only time I have to reboot it is when I hose my Windows 2000 installation.

I am using native Slot 1 CPUs, so I can't help you much on your Celeron quest. Tyan's official position is single Celeron up to 466MHz, or Slot 1 PIIIs up to 600MHz/100FSB. No Coppermine support.

Just a little FYI here. The brand of the slocket makes a HUGE difference. I used to have a Tyan Trinity 400 that I used with a P3 550E. I bought a generic no-name slocket and I couldn't overclock it at all, not even an extra 1MHz and it ended up not being totally stable. I bought an Abit (I think) Slocket III and it fixed ALL my problems. Was able to clock up to 825MHz stable.

DougLite: Unfortanetly i cant tell what version it is at this time becuase the guy whu i bought it from failed to mention that and it hasnt gotten to my house yet. The bidder only said its model number and nothing else besides that pic. Besides that i'm very pleased that i was able to get this for a cheap 40 dollars. I also found some 800 mhz slot1 proccesors on compuvest so i think im going to get one of those if its a 133.

Maximus: I planned on buying an abit slocket if indeed i do get one.

Okay got it its a 440bx now one thing are you SURE it can do 133 becuase i dont want to waste 80 bucks on a gig pentium 3

I wouldn't try it. The 440BX does not officially support 133FSB, and I doubt that board's BIOS supports Coppermines or Tualatins

i think the abit BP6 mobo is the one of the few 440BX mobo's that supported 133MHz fsb

Im almost 100% sure that you cant do this.

If i remember correctly, intel disabled SMP on celerons faster than 533mhz.

I would research this before purchasing anything.

Get 100 MHz FSB CPU's. I have a Asus 440BX board, and it can do 133 FSB, but it tends to become unstable at times, at 100 MHz it's rock solid.

You can get slot P3's in up to 1 GHz with the 100 MHz FSB, though they're hard to find and can be expensive. But you should be able to find a pair of 850's or so fairly easy.

yeah i seen a few good ones on compuvest

Ahh Also Ive been having harddrive detection problems its not fiding my harddrive which is ide its annoying as hell

Couple of thoughts for you...
440BX will support PIII@800 with no true issue....(I know this as I have a 440BX mobo and the mobo listed in my sig supports them too.)
As far as pc133, I don't know - that depends on the mobo...(the single PIII I have doesn't, and the dually runs pc600/800 rdram)
On the hdd detection, you will probably need to upgrade the bios, you may need to actually go into the bios and set them manually by what they are....(total pain in the rear)
