ok, im going to build an a64 (will be my first time building a a64  ) for a friend who is in iraq currently
we are set on this mobo, it will have a 3400+
i think the slk would be a good hs for the job but the mobo compatiblity chart only lists a cousin of the ga-k8vnxp, the ga-k8vnnxp

do i get it and hope it will fit the via board like the nvidia version or do i go with another hs? (if the latter, suggestions are welcome :))

the nFroce board is better by default, partly because both suck; but VIA somehow manages to suck more. There's an nForce 250 board that's being made already; should be in stock in about a week. It's chaintech made, check out their website. The best cooling is water cooling, however it's expensive and unnecessary in most cases. You could go for good air cooling, then you're presented two options (for the CPU hsf)

1) Thermalright 948U http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/main_product_slk948u.htm
You can put any 92 mm fan you like on there. Most people prefer panflo, because it's quiet but it's not a very good fan otherwise. Or you can put a tornado on it, it will be really cool, but it would start whistling. Also, it's heavier than recommended and might crush your core.

2) Zalman 7000A-Alcu

It has the best noise vs performance ratio right now.

we are set on the ga-k8vnxp, nothing i have seen says its worse than the nvidia version
i know the best cooling is watercooling, but it will be air cooled and not watercooled, end of story
great, suggest the heatsink i was looking at, leaving out the reason i am here

in case you didnt read the post (err, make that "since you didnt read the post"):
im looking at the slk 948
i am unsure if it will fit on the ga-k8vnxp
the slk compat chart has a variation of this board listed
should i hope it fits and get the slk or go with something else ?
