Slingbox?

I am moving to England for three years next spring and was wondering if it were worth it to pick up a Slingbox and install it on at a family members home before I go.

Was hoping for some feedback on how well slingbox works and whether it would be worth it to set this up. Any input from slingbox users would be greatly appreciated!

Slingbox works quite well. I have one at home and have rarely had issues connecting to it. Mine is the older Pro HD. I would recommend setting up its own dedicated cable/satellite box that way you don't run into any conflicts when trying to watch TV at the same time as another family member. I occasionally run into that problem with my daughter since mine is connected to the TV in the family room (the TV I mostly use). The conflicts are few and far between that I don't feel the need to dedicate its own box.

If you want digital cable or from a satellite feed, you'll need a box all to yourself at their place. You'll also want a DVR in USA to record everything.

Good to know. My in-laws have a box in their basement that is rarely used.

We'd love to be able to just watch American television and this seems like a great solution.

How much bandwidth does the Pro HD require for High Def streaming? Would it be worth it to go with the Pro HD or the Solo?

If you plan on using Slingbox in a far away country, my advice is pair it with a DVR. That way you can record your prime time favorite show and watch it in your timezone. I know there is the paid hardware and free software that does the same. But the advantage is you are not affected by network outage / jitter (you can always rewind) during the show.

IMO, there is no need to go HD when you are streaming over the internet. Especially SD means 480p over component. In US, most DSL customers can't get an uplink speed beyond 768kbps. Even if the ISP subscriber has 2+Mbps uplink, you will be using a significant share of the uplink while streaming from the slingbox.
