Well, I need a slimline DVD drive for my upcoming build, but honestly have no idea what to buy. I'll be putting this in an SG07.

Has anyone had issues w/ slot load and can you guys recommend a brand of either tray or slot load?
 
i used a samsung slot load dvd burner for awhile wasnt any problems.

I'd had no issues with slot loading drives. However, I'll point out that slim drives are a lot slower than full size ones. If you do a lot of ripping, I'd keep a full size one around as an external.
 
I'm using a Liteon DS-8A4S 8X in my SG05. I've had no problems with it. Got it pretty cheap too at around $30 Canadian.
 
I build a lot of mini-itx form factor systems.
I have used basically whatever slimline drive i can get my hands on.
Don't really know why but it seems that there is always limited supply on slim line drives, and thus what i bought one week is usually no longer available the next.

I have sucessfully used drives from Samsung, LiteOn, Sony/Optiarc, all with no issues.
I tend to find that the tray load ones are the best, as the slot load ones are far more fragile.

One thing to remember is that you will also need a slimline SATA connector (SATA+ Power in one plug), as pretty much none of these slim line optical drives use a standard SATA cable.
 
I used the Samsung Tray slim DVDRW in my sig. Every once in a great while it catches on a corner when I close it, but for the most part I'm happy with it.

Don't forget the mini-SATA to normal SATA adapter!

Can anyone point me to a slot load (not a fan of tray loads honestly) for less than the one on newegg? I believe they want $50. Just wondering if anyone knew offhand.

Btw, I won't be ripping much of anything. I really need it for installs and if the game requires the disc to be in the drive tray.

This won't be a main PC, at least for now. If I do a lot of ripping, I do have an old external USB dvd drive I can pull out.
 
I dont know if you are going to be using it the same way i am, but i plan on bringing the sg07 to a few lan parties, and im usually limited on desk space and have to put the tower on the ground... So i figure it might be worth it to use that Esata port on the mobo and get an external drive to put up on the desk, usually just as fast as the slims, and loads cheaper without having to buy an adapter on top of things. I might just look for an enclosure for my full 5.25 silent 22x drive.
 
Have you checked out geeks.com, they have a few slim slot load drives from old mac books, they don't have a cover but are cheap. Fyi in the silverstone sugo 05 I have a Panasonic bluray eide reader/dvdrw and the only problems I have had were getting a eide to usb adapter and mounting the drive. The screws to secure it were to long causing the drive to catch, nothing a few washers didn't fix.
