ok i was reading forget where it was but said the game had to be coded to work with sli. if it wasnt it would only run on 1 of the cards. is this true?

i'm going to be upgrading to sli soon and dont want to spend the money if the games have to be coded for it.

Not true.

But some games will take better advantage of it than others.

SLI has 3 ways to run:

1. Split screen: this is the best way where half of each screen get's it's own card to render it.
2. AFR: This is a "fall back" form of using both cards where each alternating fram is rendered by each card, you still get most of the benifit of SLI.
3. single card: if neither of the above will work with a given game, it will fall back to running on a single card.

My understanding is that most games will use #1 or #2, with only a few problem games falling back to single card rendering.

Yep- it's true. Unless you play at 1200 x 1600 I would not bother with SLI. You would be better off getting a fast cpu and memory with a GF 6800 Ultra- it would be cheaper or wait for ATI's new card this spring.

With SLI, will it just run, i.e. put in cards install drivers and bam its finished, or will it be quite unstable. for example some reviewers said that in games there were artifacts etc., and ut 2004 was unusable.
so, can i just stuff it in and forget about it, or will it be screwing around constantly?

i play all my games at 1600x1200. and a gf6800 ultra is not even worth the upgrade over my x800.

so how do you tell if the games will use 1 of the 2 that you listed.

According to the hexus article nvidia have to make profiles for games telling the cards what form of sli to use. So you're kinda right in the "coded for sli" thing but not on the game side.

See I had an X800Pro and I wasn't impressed with it's 1600x1200 performance at all. I went to a 6800GT and noticed a huge gain in performance.
