SLI without the bridge

Has anyone attempted to run SLI without the bridge? On OCworkbench they are stating that it is now not necessary to use the bridge, but performance will be better if you use one.

As far as I know, this is how it has always been. The SLI connector wasn't 'required' but you are supposed to use it for the best performance.

It was that way initially, then Nvidia disabled it to keep people from modding their DFI Ultra-D boards and having SLI. It is interesting that they would get rid of this, then bring it back so people can SLI the 6600 and 6200. Seems pointless to allow it on those cards anyways.
