what if you decide to buy a single 6600gt now and when you get enough money to set a second one for a SLI setup you discover that that identical card is not avail.. will the setup still work with another SLI ready card as long as it has the same gpu?

SLI with different cards but same GPU?

I belive so, but don't quote me on that. I know that it can even adjust between different clockspeeds as long as it is the same GPU (i.e. the OCed card gets a larger chunk to render and even out the process), so I would think that the brand makes no difference.
This would make since with SFR (split frame rendering) which supports load balancing, but isn't the fastest SLI mode.
AFR (alternate frame rendering) has one card render 1 frame and the second card render the 2nd frame. They work lock step on this process, so this is why it's recommended to have the "same card".
I suspect that as long as it's the same chipset, core and memory speeds, you "may" be OK, but that's an unsupported configuration. Depends also possibly on if they are "copies" of a reference design or "optimized".

its not just a brilliant marketing ploy.. it allows for signifigant upgrades later on. say you have a 6800gt pci-e.. and instead of selling your USED 6800gt for a lower price and getting something better. you decide to get another 6800gt and link them in SLI. Thats a whole lot cheaper than buying a single card that can beat both 6800gts in SLI...

well it makes sense.
Each vendor builds their own card. Not all cards are alike hence different bios's
Most buy BFG for SLI, I would go with BFG if I was ever planning to SLI. Best warranty and most availability I find.
