SLI tech / driver question

I'm just getting a new maching together using two 6600GT's, mostly to drive 4 monitors in windows. Of course, every now and then I'll want to play games, so I'll reboot to SLI mode for performance.

What I'm wondering is if there's any hardware reason that nVidia couldn't change the driver to allow the other 3 outputs on the two cards to run in 2D mode while SLI is going on on the primary display of the first card. For my purposes, that would be ideal -- I'm mostly just using 2d apps in windows and want to game on one monitor every now and then. It would be great to not have to reboot for that.

Anyone know the hardware well enough to comment?

Thanks
