Ok I get your point on SLI, and its mainly for 1600x1200 or higher res'. But why are you complaining about it if your only running games @ 1024x768! I mean cmon! Its meant for high resolutions and if you plunk in an SLI system, and game at 1024x768, you are one wasting money as there will be no increase what-so-ever. SLi is still in its infancy, as it grows with each driver release. Its not even a year old for crying out loud. Forceware 80 is going to bring a lot more to the table as performance increases a lot than with previous releases. So the choice is up to you, game at that res with an OK card, or get a higher end card and game at a better resolution and see what all this fuss is about becuase ill never go back to 1024x768 (except 800x600 for starcraft )
yes - in all honesty SLi does not make much sense for people whose displays max @ 1024x768... I would see folks to went SLi on their small(ish) displays and would be like "WTF? - why did I just spend all this dough on SLi??" and such... it really shines at higher res, like 1280x1024 and up and with the eye candy on full freaking blast! ...and it is a bit geared towards the enthusiast also, but there seem to be more and more of them about.
I bought a samsung 204T. That is a native 16*12. And LCD loses more IQ than usual at lower reses. Now a 7800GTX SLI can game at 4x AA & 16x AF at 16*12 very comfortably. In 6 months, I will be able to game at 16*12 with no AA and little AF (At that res? No big loss). In a year, I can trade my samsung 204T for a LCD with a native of 12*10 and play at max. In a year and a half, I will probably upgrade.
With a 7800GTX SLI setup I am future proofed. No need to worry about that. This comes in handy when you live in Ghana and can't upgrade on a regular basis due to a 100% lack of supply of good stuff in your country.
SLI is not a waste. Overpriced? A bit, but not a total waste.
