SLi-rdy memory or OCZ platinum?

Hi HardOCP'ers,

I'm building a new rig just like everybody else... My first build in a few years, so I've just recently begun reading up on things like OC'ing etc.

I have a budget of aprox 2500 $, that may sound like a lot, but it's not really where I come from (Scandinavia)... mid-range pc at most. anyways...

Looking at different memory-blocks for my new build, and at first I thought of buying the reliable and wellknown Corsair (TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX), but apparently a lot of people choose OCZ as their preferred memory, so now I've been looking at two diffenrent OCZ memory:

OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition 4GB Dual Channel (CL 5-4-4-15)

&

OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 8GB Platinum Quad Kit (CL 5-4-4-18)

I'm going for 8 GB's of RAM in a XFX 780i mobo, What would you recommend of the two above or perhaps the Corsair? The SLi-rdy would fit really good in the SLi mobo, but are the Platinum memory better?

I plan on tweaking and OC'ing just a little bit. I'm getting a Q9450 Quad, so here's an extra question; DDR II at 800Mhz means I can get 3.2 Ghz (with 8xmultiplier) max. right? Is there any way I can get more ..like 3.4 or 3.6 with the 800Mhz ram, or would I have to get another mobo and memory that run at higher mhz?

Just newb signing in at [h]...

Isn't "SLi" in memory just a gimmick? It's something like turning "sli" in your motherboard and it detects your timings (should). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

SLI memory is about like a Vista monitor, a marketing gimmick. Apparently it is supposed to set some of the timings for you but it is nothing you can not do yourself in about 30 seconds. Just go with the better memory. I am not very familiar with OCZ so I will leave that part to others, I have always been partial to Crucial, G.Skill, and Mushkin myself.

Lot's of people in the world actually appreciate and use the SLI ready memory feature. Not everyone wants to manually set timings or even cares to know how. They like a basic 1 setting OC. SLI Ready / XMP / SMART RAM is not for everyone but it is not a gimmick.

I've notcied some people have thrown in pc8500 memory in their XFX 780i despite the fact that it supports pc6400 ? Do any of you know whether or not I will be able to overclock my cpu to a higher mhz than 3.2 ghz with just pc6400? if not then i would have to consider a change in mobo and then sstart looking for some PC8500 instead.

peace

Pardon me for posting again twice in a row. I'm not trying to bump, but I got a question for you Mike Clement, since I can see you're an official Corsair guy....now here's my question;

The TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF seems to be supporting EPP, now isn't that just what all this SLi-ready is about? According to the .pdf (http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF.pdf) "the open standard for performancemodule SPD’s jointly developed by Corsair and Nvidia".

So ... The XFX 780i motherboard supports SLi-ready memory upto1200mhz..I guess that means that the above Corsair is supported right? Unfortunately the memory isn't listed as Sli-ready on NVIDIA's own website : http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_mem.html ..this could be a mistake though. Would be very pleased if you could answer this.

Thanks
