With ATI AMR details emerging, do you think Nvidia will scrap its current SLI solution? I adopted SLI early on and have really enjoyed it. However, the r520 will probably be a much better card than any dual nvidia cards out currently, and AMR is supposedly better than Nvidia SLI from what I have read. I would hate to scrap my nforce4 sli mobo if it will not be supported in the near future. What are your thoughts on this? I would love to be able to put two next gen GPU's on my nforce4 mobo and continue to enjoy SLI.
 
well..the concept shouldn't scraped just because ATI can release one card that beats two..

nvidia just has to release some better performing cards..there *should* be much more potential to SLI
 
I agree with that, but I meant more along the lines that techpowerup seemed to feel that nvidia splits the screen in two and each card renders one half, and that is inferior to ATI's solution where it renders much differently. SO i am afraid that nvidia will mimic that and bring out an entirely different tech to compete thus making my nforce4 sli obsolete as far as SLI will be concerned.
 
am i offbase in my thinking or what? looking for others opinions that know more than me (practically everyone!)
 
I agree with terminator02. I posted something like this in another forum. This from TSLMAR "The main disadvantage to an SLI configuration is cost. Most people have enough trouble scrapping together enough $$$ to buy a single 6800GT, let alone 2 of them.

The replys were many, ended up changeing my mind about the MoBo I was planning to buy, which was SLI supported, and just getting a PCI supported MoBo. Not all were against SLI but the cons really outweigh the pros.
 
No, nVidia also has a next-gen card coming. The G80 is their answer to the R520. I can ASSURE you that there will be a SLI G80 card. SLI is nVidia's baby, and they sure aren't going to give it up that easy.

When is the G80 being announced? like more info?

The main reason I never thought SLI as a good upgrade path (1 6800GT now, 1 later) is because of Dx10 (Or whatever) with the R520, and (hpefully) the G80 supporting Dx 10 (or whateve it's called) now SLI/AMR seems like a smarter upgrade path.
 
well i dont mind having two ultras now. I was willing to pay the premium to play current games at the highest resolution and settings possible given todays cards. When the r520 comes out, i will have already enjoyed a good 6+ months of awesome power. Price to performance was not the issue for me at this point. But, I am just wondering if AMR is just much better engineered, and Nvidia might ditch its current SLI "baby" in order to make a newer and incompatible version of SLI for their next cards. If Nvidia supports the nforce4 sli mobo with its next gen cards, then I will surely think it was an excellent upgrade path, as I willl probably buy 1 then 1 down the road....though I wonder if my ppc&c 510 will be able to handle all that power.....

It's under warrantly for a dual cpu, SLI system with up to 11 hard drives plugged in.
 
Any r520 card will be paper released and we wont see it till the end of the year and if last year is any indication,,,,,,,, it will be 1000 dollars. The same goes for G80. Two ultras are good to go for the next year or so. Two Ultras are already held back by all but the most powerfull processor.


Be carefull people. Physics subsystems are on the horizon. If you have dual Ultras hang on to them and let things shake out. 2 years and the landscape will be very different

Very true. In a few years, we will be spending $500 for a graphics card, and $500 for a physics card.
