SLI purchase question

I'm wanting to get in to the nvidia 8800 line, looking at probably a 8800GTS with 640mb.

I was talking about this with a clerk at a store when I was buying my new case and the guy brought up what I thought was a good point.

I would like to do SLI...I just spent 320 on the Asus Striker Extreme to do just that..BUT..

How hard is it to grow into a second card later? The store clerk was pointing out that SLI may not even work between two cards that appear to be identical but say in a few months they revise the device...and I have ver. 1 of the card and everyone is selling ver. 1.2

Do you think this is a valid concern or am I just worrying for nothing?

I was at first looking at getting two 8800gts with 320mb...but then I read a thread on here talking about there not being a point at sub 16x12 resolutions and better to stick with just one card. Well I dont have a display NEARLY that good...I was thinking about piping the PC into my LCD TV but it only has a max res of like 13xsomething...

I'm obligated to do SLI now or I just wasted $100+ on that motherboard...but I am really not ready to drop $600+ more on a pair of 8800gts cards...

How hard do you think it would be to get the 2nd card later?

Oh and that price drop on the arrival of the R600 seemed to be more like a price increase of like +$20...and here I was being all patient thinking I could scoop a better deal if I waited a few days :p

Thanks in advance for your help...I'm new to this game again...haven't built a rig in like 5 yrs or so...back in the Athlon XP days...

Sounds like your store clerk was trying to make a bigger sale at the moment.

I've seen people with different brand 8800's run SLI, different revs, blah blah. the main thing to realize is that if you mix OC'd cards, you'll end up being stuck with the lower clock rate.

I have 8800gts 640mb sli on a striker and I purchased my second GTS a couple months after the first one. Haven't had any problems.
