I am trying to build myself a new computer that will last me decent amount of time.. that will be excellent for both gaming and general applications such as MSVC++ and modelling software...

Currently I am just getting caught up with the hardware again since its recent jump, I am trying to figure out what the pros and cons are of SLi and PCI-Express.. I have seen benchmarks with SLi and dont see much difference..

Can anyone help me make a decision on a great computer build.. i am sorta on a budget.. less than $1000 .. if kept to around $600 that would be excellent...

You're far mistaken if you don't think there's much difference in SLI and single card. On the other hand, you're not going to build a SLI computer on your budget.
 
If you are building a new system I dont see any reason why you would go AGP.
Currently while PCIe does not offer any speed advantages it will be the future format for GFX cards and will show more use in the future. SLi on the other hand I cant say much about. Personaly if I were you I would wait for a R520 or G70 type gfx card, as they will be faster than our current gen and both will offer a sort of Multi VPU option. If you dont want to wait I would suggest two Quadros or whatever they are called (the Professinal 6x00 series GPU) and put them in a SLI config.
 
Can anyone link me to some articles about SLI and PCI-Express so I can get some more information.. I am looking to run some high performance games like Quake 4 and HalfLife 2... so I need a pretty hefty system.. and it will need to last me a few years.. so I am gonna go all out CPU and graphics wise...
 
The best high end system would be a couple of Socket 940 Dual AMD64s (highest end parts) and two 6800U's in SLI or two Quadros (highest end parts).
Even still they wont run all the latest games at their highest res and settings but they should still far pretty well.

Did you even notice his budget? That stuff would cost in the $3000+ area EASY. No way can he even think about SLI with a budget of $1000, he'd be hard press with even $1500.

Dude, just get yourself a nice low end A64, 1GB of memory, Nforce 4 mobo, and a 6800GT or X800XL, then fill out your HD needs by space and plan for the future, so if you think you'll use only 100GB get a 200GB.
 
How about a Radeon X800 XT PE... it looks like its stable in most of the benchmarks I have seen..
 
Lol sorry dude, didnt notice the Budget. Just pulled an all nighter watching the rest Of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
I have a X800XT and other than the little problem I am having now (which I suspect is the mobo) its a fine card. Of course if I were you I would get the X850XT instead of the X800XTPE, same performance but the X850XT is easier to find with a better cooler.
 
if you really want to go sli now i would get a motherbored that supported it and buy one card now, then after the new cards come out and this gen is alot cheaper go buy another one

Building PCI-E is the only way to go. Waiting to build a system only because of a video card doesn't make sense. Build now, throw in a cheaper card, then upgrade to the uber high end later if you like.

SLi is much faster, but only in games and applications where it is supported.
 
Exactly what I said. My Next system will be PCIe with either a G70 or a R520.
Which ever is faster. I might go dual GPU the year those come out, depending on how much better Driver support is on both platforms.
 
Baggy, you don't have enough money to throw around to get what you want. You'll have to go for Athlon 64 3000+, 1gig ram, hdd, pci-e mobo, 6600gt or somethin.
 
On a sub 1000 budget, the only SLi you'd be getting is 6600GT's, which wouldn't be as good a deal as a 6800GT. With that you could add one later.

For around $800 or so you can get:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Venice) (Boxed w/Fan)
MSI K8N-Neo4 SLi board (Decent board, hate the layout)
512MB Corsair Value Select PC3200 ram. (2x256) (Sucktastic ram)
a decent PSU,
80GB Western Digital 7200rpm SATA 150 HD
52x32x52 Sony CD-R/CD-RW drive
Cheap Ass butt ugly ATX case

So you can do it, but you can get more performance for the dollar purchasing a little wiser.
