I am at a crossroads

I want to upgrade my PC from my Barton Processor to a Athlon 64. I need to upgrade the MB, CPU and Video card.

The problem is the video card, do you think its better to get a 7800GTX
or wait until Crossfire comes out.
 
Well since we first heard about Crossfire I haven't heard anything else about it from ATi, so uh...hmm not sure what to tell you...
 
Get a 7800GTX. If ATi eventually competes with it and does a better job, sell the 7800GTX and buy the R520 card.

btw is crossfire even avalible yet?

get whichever is better wen u build ur pc
 
just depends on if you want a card that exists like the 7800 and is blazing fast or do you want vaperware which isnt even out for a card which most likely will not be out till september.

personally i say SLI>
 
sli is pretty expensive (if it's gonna be worth it). and it's only worth it if you get the 2 of the top card available, b/c otherwise you could just get the top card.

so get one 7800 at least, and if you can afford it, two.
 
Considering Crossfire isn't even available yet and ATi doesn't have a release date on their nextgen hardware. I'd say the choice is clear. Unless you want to wait 3 months or more for new hardware to come out. I'd go with the 7800GTX. Quite a bit faster than the X850XT-PE and you can do SLi with them today. Hell 7800GTX's are easier to find than the X850XT-PE's are. The 7800GTX's MSRP isn't even that much higher.

ATi just doesn't have thier shit together anymore.

did they just completely skip this generation?
 
you won't know until Crossfire is released. + you'll probably need to give it a few months to mature.

So if you're anxious then SLI is probably the only option.

I'm hoping that by the time I upgrade everything will be sorted out with SLI, crossfire, dual-core (pricing!), etc...

so. Why the fuck when I said "I am happy with my 7800s, but if a much better card comes out, then I will sell them and get that", every one bashed me and was like "you want to upgrade for only 2% increse in performance? Wow you must just like to waste money and have the best of the best". And you say the same thing and 3 people agree with you... wtf?
 
I think that they wont even release crossfire until they can spank the fastest sli system. Assuming that the 520 is faster than any Nvidias cards I think we will start to see crossfire cards a little after the 520 is out. This is speculation.
 
Though, if you get SLI now (which I have and can say its kick ass) and you eventually want the so called "crossfire" then you would have to change mobos because it is required to be used with ATI's new up coming chipset (which in the past ati chipsets sucked).
 
I think 7800GTX (+ 7800 SLI) sent ATI back to the drawing board.... or at least the retaping board to get a better silicon spin to get higher clocks..... and a dual slot cooler, etc... (IE: fx 5800 dust buster approach)

They don't want to release an inferior and/or paper launch only product and get dealt a PR blow. Especially after Nvidia delivered so well. ATI is big on image with the gamers, so they gotta do something really good or lose face.

Well you're totally wrong and im not shocked :), go use an Xpress200 mobo or a 9100IGO chipset mobo and until then stfu.

Personally i think all you people complicate these threads way too much. Two very simple options, buy whats best now, or wait a few months and see. Thats all there is to it.

ATI has stated that Crossfire cards will be available late August/early september. They're aiming to have it out about a month before the R520, which is slated to come out mid-late September.

As for which of the two I prefer, I haven't seen Crossfire, so I can't say for certain. I DO know that SLI has yet to impress me (the whole idea of different profiles just seems messy to me) and I like how Crossfire will, in theory at least, work for all cards, and doesn't require different profiles. Only time will tell if ATI succeeds or fails though.
 
sli has been out for a year now, so the drivers and stuff has matured, while corssfire is new and its like putting a newborn on its own two feet

Where do you get a year from? The first board was released in the beginning of january. 6 months ago SLI was barely working. How soon we forget.

personally ati. unbiased opinion... sli.

its probably cause my first high end card ever was a 9800 pro.. so ever since then ive been biased toward ati.

And im not shocked at all with your response. And thats not all there is too it. Consider things like, do you already have a pci-e mobo, or would you have to buy that too? then consider how much am I looking to spend? then consider do I want to wait for crossfire or get sli now? then consider performance. Theres alot more to it that just buy whats best now, or wait a few months. Total noob suggestion. Until you can answer those questions about which to get, stfu.

still no reason for you to knock ATI chipsets saying they've all sucked, which is total BS. im not turning this persons thread into a flame war so im gonna drop it.
 
I didnt say they all sucked, but I said mostly all of them. I'm just saying its a totally different technology that has its positives and negatives just like sli.
 
i have an ati based board and its nice and stable. but i wouldnt call it an enthusiast platform. ;)
