Sli on crosfire boards ?

SLI is SLI and crossfire is crossfire, you need to have SLI board for Nvidia and crossfire for ATi cards. Nvidia on crossfire will work only when one card is installed(or ATi card on SLI).

I thought, with the advent of the new boards (X58 maybe?) that one could run either SLi or Crossfire.

Did this never come to fruition?

There is a specification to made combined system which will allow to use cards without matter of their platform, also heard that various models will be able to run in dual mode. But I think standard PCI-E boards allow to run multiple mode with same cards and on their native platform only. Don't know if crossing of this kind will work(never tried it).

On the new X58 boards you can run either Crossfire or SLi.
The only kicker is the board must specifically say it supports SLi, although most do anyway.

The question about the 295 is interesting......it IS a "single" card, and therefore may run on an ATI board......however it is also SLi on a stick so it most likely needs nvidia SLi drivers???

That said, the 4870 X2 runs on nvidia chipset boards........:D

You don't need an SLI or Crossfire board to run the any of the multi GPU on one card, video cards.

As far as the motherboard is concerned, a GTX 295, 9800GX2, 4870X2 and 4850X2 is just a single card in a slot. If you wanted to run two GTX 295 cards in SLI, you would need to have a SLI motherboard, but a single GTX 295 will operate normally in a Crossfire motherboard. These cards use internal SLI or Crossfire bridges that bypass the PCI-E slot.

As far as what motherboards will run both SLI and Crossfire: it is possible on X58 motherboards - if the motherboard maker buys a license from Intel, then they can release a BIOS update that will allow that motherboard to also run SLI. Gigabyte has just recently bought such a license for all of their X58 motherboards and either have or are in the process of releasing BIOS updates for all of those motherboards.
