Sleeving PCI-E Cables

Potentially very noobian question here but I'm doing some planning before I my sleeving arrives and checking out the PCI-E cables, what is that large collar?

Is it ok to remove it? Is it difficult to remove?
 
Ah ok, it's a capacitor and as I understand generally bad juju to remove.

I think I will just sleeve up to the capacitor and heat shrink around it.
 
Its not a capacitor, its a magnet. Remove the heatshrink and hit the magnet with a small hammer and it will break apart.

I've done it numerous time with zero problems, as have many others.
 
It not a capacitor or a magnet, it a ferrite core used to filter out noise. If its all one piece you will have to break it to get it off. Sometimes they are in two halves in which case it will just fall off on its own.
 
ferrite core = magnet. probably not needed but as an engineer I have to say they put it there for something. the people wo designed it would not have wasted money adding ferrite if it did not outweigh the cost of adding it. I would recommend just sleeving over it.
 
The ferrite beeds or cores are magnetic in their properties but I wouldn't exactly call them magnets. It's iron oxide in an epoxy. They won't stick to your fridge for instance. The ones on your cables offer a high resistance to high frequency signals. They filter out any noise or interference that other components in your PC may generate giving you clean DC power. You will see them on the end of power cables for laptops, DVI cables and other high end electronics. It's probably better to leave them but its ultimately up to you.
 
I think I’ll subscribe to the thought that the engineers must have had a reason to put it there. I’ll likely sleeve up to the ferrite and heat shrink the whole thing from there.

I stand corrected you are more exact in your specification. a magnet would have the charge facing the same way. in short, a material /= magnet ... a material with specific orientation of atoms = magnet
 
I may have come off as being nit picky but I didn't mean too. I'm an electronic technician and some things just "spike" my interest. ;) I see a lot of ferrite beeds, bars, donuts, whatever you want to call them, used in what I work on. I only mentioned it because usually you don't want magnets near your computer gear/magnetic media. Although these days it not such a big deal, you don't see to many floppies laying around any more. :)
