I've never sleeved a PSU before, so bear with my ignorance... I bought a sleeving kit, (mod/smart kit), not realizing that there isn't nearly enough material to sleeve each wire on a PSU. I think you're expected to sleeve whole cables since it didn't even come with heat shrink small enough for half the sleeve material they give you. So my question is, do people just buy bigger kits to do an entire PSU, buy pre-sleeved cables, or buy bulk sleeve material and heatshrink (probably the way to go).
 
Sleeving kits are designed to sleeve the entire group of wires, not each individual wire. If you want to sleeve each individual wire then you have to buy in bulk.

Here is a customer review to give you an idea what people are saying. Supposedly, it's good. Some say it's denser than MDPC-X, others say it's woven tighter. It's all subjective. I will never go around talking down about MDPC. The intention was never to mimic or copy. So if it's a little different, it's just as well.

How would you describe the differences between FTW sleeving and the paracord? Is one more flexible at turning than the other?
 
i would say that paracord is definitely more flexible. its like a cloth. it looks too much like shoelace to me though imo. i have mdpc and its the best :)
 
Anyway..........

If you want to do single wire sleeving, and you want to use the wires on your PSU and not custom lengths........

you need three things.
1) Molex brand pin tool
2) Good sleeving.
3) Good heatshrink.

I use MDPC-X, the only thing expensive about them is shipping. When you order you get an ass-load of material.plus he supplies a ton of ATX and PCI-e pins with his orders.
I have one of their Molex pin tools and their crimping tool which is a MUST if you want to make your own wires.

I recently looked at FTW and their stuff looks good, too. Advantage, it's US and not German.

FTW Sleeve is a plastic based woven sleeving, like MDPC-X is, while Paracord is a textile based sleeving. Paracord is a wonderful solution to work with if you are on a budget but many people don't like the look of it and it doesn't provide stiffness for making uniform curves

lol. I'd love to see if that would work. And I'd really love to see if the cable still worked after that. Another marketing tool. "Washable Cables"

All you need in addition to what I listed:

1000W or better blow dryer, heat guns are ok but most every house has a blow dryer.
sharp scissors or a scalpel
meter stick and a good straight edge
scotch tape
patience
 
Just received a bunch of FTW sleeving today in the mail.

I also bought one of the FTW Molex pin remover tools, the thing that's shown in the pictures above.

The tool works like a hot knife through butter, one of the best purchases I've made next to the MDPC-X crimping tool.

As for the sleeving, I don't have a good close-up lens for my Nikon.....to me MDPC-X sleeving is a finer nylon and thus a tighter and finer weave, very flexible.

The FTW PC sleeving has exactly the same number of nylon fibers in the weave and looks pretty, but the nylon is more dense or thicker or something. The sleeving seems heavier and less flexible, but very high quality.

I have to say, I'll be sticking with MDPC-X, I just wish it wasn't in Germany....the shipping expense sucks.

Thats pretty good work for a first try.
Yup....a little long on the shrink, and maybe use a thinner shrink, MDPC-X sells a pretty thin shrink.

I have to agree with you on the FTW sleeving. It's thicker and heavier than anything I've had to date.
I don't think that's a statement on the quality at all, it's just different.....I have to work with it a little before i can say it's good or bad.
