i purchased 10 sleeve bearing fans @ newegg a month ago and i heard someone say that the fans would last longer if u lubricate it. Is this really true and what would i use to lubricate it?..motor oil? lol

I suppose if I were going to do something like that I would use silicone spray lubricant.

It might work. The worst thing that will happen is it won't affect anything. Silicone is non-conductive.

I have fans that have lasted for years.

Why mess with it?

Fan design is going to change. Just let them "run their course" and replace them in 2 years with the latest fans.

Wonder what they will have next...?
We have cathodes in fans, LED's in fans......hmm.....?

just dont use WD40 on it.

You want to use a light oil, maybe even something designed for like gun lubrication which is what I use if I have a fan that is acting up.

Most times you wont have to do anything with them at least not right away. Sleeve bearings wear out a lot faster then the ball bearing type of fans though. If you are really paranoid, just throw like 2 drops of oil in the back of the fans every couple of months to keep them in top shape.

Those fans are already pretty well lubricated. If you peel the sticker off you'll see a little glob of grease sitting there that slowly feeds into the bearing and shaft of the fan while its spinning. Should be fine as is.

ok thanks guys, and btw i found that little blob of grease. But i was just wondering would synthetic motor oil do any good in lubricating?

Motor oil would be a little heavy for it. Your best bet for smooth operation would be to keep them clean, using filters on your intakes. That way you won't crud up the bearings and ruin the grease. I've seen a LOT of dirty grease in my time, and it doesn't do the job nearly as well, and it increases wear.
